In Jeremiah, God speaks through the prophet to confront Israel’s unfaithfulness. Despite being delivered and sustained by God, the people turned away, placing their trust in idols—worthless substitutes that could never satisfy. God calls this a double tragedy: abandoning Him, the “fountain of living water,” and choosing broken cisterns instead. In Jeremiah 20:12, we see Jeremiah’s own anguish as he continues to speak truth, trusting in the God who sees the heart. Let these words challenge us to examine the subtle ways idolatry seeps into our own lives and to re-center our hope in the God who truly sustains.
