UNITED METHODIST BELIEFS – CONDENSED
We believe in:
The only living and true God, the almighty Creator of all things, existing eternally in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, full of love and glory.
Genesis 1:1, Colossians 1:15-17, John 14:15-17
The unique divine inspiration, entire trustworthiness and authority of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments. It is to be received through the Holy Spirit as the true rule for faith and practice. Whatever is not established by the Bible is not to be taught as essential to salvation.
2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:16-21
The value and dignity of all people: created in God’s image to live in love and holiness, but all alienated from God and each other because of our sin and guilt, and justly subject to God’s wrath.
Genesis 1:26-27, Romans 3:9-12
Jesus Christ, only Son of God, born of the Virgin Mary, fully human and fully divine, who lived as a perfect example, who voluntarily assumed the judgement due sinners by dying in our place, and who was bodily raised from the dead and ascended as Savior and Lord.
John 1:1-15, Matthew 1:20-25, John 3:16, Philippians 2:5-11, 1 Corinthians 15:3-8
Justification (being counted as sinless) by God’s grace to all who repent and put their faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. We believe God’s grace, coming before our decision, enables any sinner to repent and be justified.
Acts 2:37-39, Romans 3:21-25
Sanctification (the renewal of our fallen nature by the Holy Spirit) as received through faith in Jesus Christ. Sanctification is the work of God’s grace through the Word and the Spirit, by which those who have been born again are cleansed from sin in their thoughts, words, and acts and are enabled to live in accordance with God’s will, and strive for holiness.
Galatians 5:16-25, 1 Peter 1:13-16, 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8
Good works as the necessary fruits of faith, but not having the power to remove our sins or avert divine judgement. By them faith is made evident.
Ephesians 2:4-10, James 2:14-17
The unity of all believers in Jesus Christ, manifest in our worshiping and witnessing church of believers, making disciples throughout the world.
1 Corinthians 12:12-27, 1 Peter 2:9-10, Matthew 28:19-20, Romans 10:13-15
Baptism as a signifying entrance into the household of faith, and as a symbol of repentance and inner cleansing of sin, as a representation of new birth in Christ Jesus, and as a mark of Christian discipleship.
Mark 1:4-11, Acts 2:38-39, Galatians 3:27-28
The Lord’s Supper as a means of grace, a representation of our redemption, a remembrance of the sufferings and death of Christ, and a symbol of love and union which Christians have with Christ and with one another.
Luke 22:14-20, 1 Corinthians 10:16-17, Acts 2:42, 46-47
The victorious reign and future personal return of Jesus Christ, who will judge all people, living and dead, with justice and mercy, giving over the unrepentant to eternal damnation but receiving the redeemed into eternal life.
John 5:25-29, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, Revelation 20:11-15 & 21:1-5
A personal note…
Ours is a love story.
God loved us so much that He sent His only Son to die for us that we may be saved by grace and have life everlasting. This free offer of salvation is available to all who believe and invite Jesus into their hearts as Lord and Savior.
How can you join God’s family?
Acknowledge God. Confess your sinful nature and turn your attention to Him. Tell Him you would like a personal relationship with Him, and receive the invitation of grace for Christ to live in your heart.
Repent and tell Him you are sorry for the things in you that make you unworthy of Him, an holy and pure God. Ask for His help to change your destructive habits and old patterns.
Accept what He has done to make us pure in His sight – He gave us His Son, Jesus Christ, who became a man, lived a perfect life, and died as a sacrifice for our sins. Jesus rose from the dead and calls to us today. He wants us to live with Him eternally. When we accept Jesus, God sees us through the lens of Jesus’ perfection. We are saved by grace through faith in Christ!
Be willing to be changed into the character of Jesus with the help of the Holy Spirit. You will be surprised! God will put a new heart in you. You’ll find yourself desiring – and being equipped – to become more like Jesus, one baby step at a time. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been. God forgives you and He can transform you. You are not a lost cause. He loves YOU!
We also invite you to enter into a loving relationship with the family of believers here at Orange United Methodist Church. This website can be a valuable resource to learn about the many opportunities to get involved. Join us on Sunday mornings or participate in one of our small groups. We are a community of imperfect people saved by grace and living as brothers and sisters in Christ. We want you to be a part of our family!
Do you have questions or want help with your decision? Please contact one of our ministry staff directly or contact the church office at 919-942-2825.
